CHENNAI: The prime opposition party, AIADMK, in the State has launched a membership drive to infuse young blood and strengthen the party from grass root level.

General Secretary of the party Edappadi K Palaniswami kick-started the campaign that aimed to add at least 50 lakh more members to take the party's total membership to 2 crore.

Apart from carrying out enrolment drives, the party functionaries would simultaneously carry out the exercise of renewing the existing membership. "At present, the party has around 1.48 crore members. Every five years, the party leadership will carry out the exercise of renewing the membership of the existing members to keep the records intact. Now, the party leader has asked the district secretaries and senior leaders to take the total number of the membership to 2 crores," said a party functionary involved in distributing the application forms for renewal and enrollment of new members.

EPS, on Monday, participated in the Twitter Space organised by the IT wing and emphasised the importance of youngsters in politics. He sent across a clear message to the party cadres that anyone can become the leader of the party, which chooses its leader in a democratic way, and emphasised that those who remain "loyal and work hard" for the party would be honoured with recognising and postings.

"Several functionaries from AMMK, BJP and DMDK have joined the AIADMK party in the presence of our leader (EPS) in the recent past. This shows that the party is regaining its momentum as a strong political force. This also shows that party functionaries have accepted EPS as the leader to take forward the party's legacy and live upto the dreams of Amma (Jayalalithaa)," said another functionary.
