CHENNAI: A day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to secure release of Indians, including Tamils abducted in Myanmar, the former chief minister and ousted AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam on Thursday urged the Centre to do the same.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Panneerselvam said "I would like to bring to your immediate notice the fact that nearly 300 Indians, including 60 persons from Tamil Nadu, who had initially moved to Thailand for employment were abducted and taken to Myanmar, are forced to carry out illegal jobs that includes online scamming.”

Stating that refusals to abide by their instructions in such indulgence, Indian citizens are inflicted with electric shocks as punishment, the deputy opposition leader of the House said: “It has been reported that they are held as hostages.”

"Family members of our innocent citizens are under extreme fear not knowing the whereabouts of their dear ones in Myanmar,” he said adding that it’s necessary to ensure their safe return to India.

"Hence, I would be grateful if you could kindly intervene personally and take up the matter at the highest level in Myanmar to secure the safety and security of Indians and arrange for their safe passage back to India,” he added.
