COIMBATORE: Barely days after water receded from flooded residential areas following a significant drop in flow of Cauvery River, heavy overnight rains resulted in inundation of around 100 houses in Namakkal on Monday.

The overnight rains led to Katheri and Olapalayam lakes overflowing into residential areas like MGR Nagar, Kamban Nagar, Bharathi Street, Rajaji Kuppam and other surrounding localities. Traffic was disrupted on Salem main road, which came under three feet of water.

DMK and AIADMK functionaries distributed food packets to people in affected areas. As the premises of a Girls High School in Komarapalayam, Government Middle School in Vasuki Nagar and primary school in Bharathiar Street turned into a pool of water, officials declared holiday. Efforts were also taken by the revenue department to drain out the stagnant water from these institutions.

Residents claimed that encroachments built obstructing the path of waterways caused flooding in residential areas. They also sought for immediate steps to remove illegal constructions on waterbodies to avoid a similar incident.

Similarly, in Erode, water entered into more than 50 houses in Ammapettai following torrential rains all through the night. A surge in flow of water in Pichaikaranpallam canal led to submergence of a causeway in B P Agraharam area. It also led to disruption of vehicle movement through the way.
