Heavy rain lashes Delta dists; 2 persons, 2 cows die in lightning strike

Pre-summer rains accompanied by strong winds lashed almost all areas in Delta districts on Friday evening and two persons and two cows were killed in lightning strike in two different incidents in Perambalur district.

TIRUCHY/CHENNAI: As predicted by the meteorological department, heavy showers was witnessed across the Delta region. The downpours that started in Tiruchy district after 4 pm affected traffic in several parts of the district.

Meanwhile, in Perambalur, two persons of a group, which took cover under a tree from rain, were killed in a lightning strike at Kenipalayam village. The victims were identified as Chinnadurai (45) and Ramar (53) from the same locality. Another person, Vekatesh (34), of the same group, was seriously injured.

Meanwhile the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) Chennai predicted heavy rains over Western ghats too and Delta districts for the next 48 hours due to overlay circulation over Sri Lanka.

“Due to overlay atmospheric circulation prevailing over Sri Lanka and adjoining areas, and heat convection - Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Western Ghats and Delta districts is likely to get heavy rains along with thunderstorm activity for the next two days,” said P Senthamarai Kannan, Scientist E, RMC. The official added that from April 11, light to moderate rains are expected at Western Ghats and southern districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal due to heat convection.

On Friday, Karur recorded a maximum of 39 degree Celsius and Dharmapuri the lowest temperature of 23.5 degree Celsius.
