Cash for vote case in Vikravandi bypoll closed

The Madras High Court has closed a petition moved by Tamilar Kudiarasu Katchi Party leader and director V Gauthaman accusing Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and others of bribing voters during the by-election held at Vikravandi in Villupuram district.

Justice P Rajamanickam before whom the plea came up on Monday on recording the police submission that there was no basis for the allegation made, closed the petition. Gauthaman had lodged a complaint stating that during the by-election huge amounts were disbursed by the both the AIADMK and DMK for the sake of votes for their respective candidates. In the complaint, Gauthaman had named Chief Minister Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and DMK president MK Stalin and youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin of disbursing cash for votes. But with the police failing to register an FIR, Gauthaman had moved the High Court. In response, the police submitted that based on the complaint lodged, the flying squad comprising of election officials held a probe and found no substance in the allegations made. Based on this and direction from Villupuram SP, the case was closed.
