More than 16,000 noon meal workers, including cooks, helpers and managers, went on strike, forcing the shutdown of noon meal centres during the school working day.

Following this, officials intervened to unlock the centres and directed women Self Help Group (SHGs) members engaged for the CM’s Breakfast Scheme to cook lunch for students on Tuesday afternoon.

The association held a state executive committee meeting almost a fortnight ago and discussed that the demands of the noon-meal workers had not been met by the government, and they have been struggling to make ends meet for a long time.3

The association has been demanding time-scale pay, Rs 5 lakh to noon meal workers after retirement, and a monthly pension of Rs 9,000 and filling vacancies.
