The police said that the road was diverted to take a U-turn but there were no barricades to stop the vehicles and the victim fell into the pit along with the motorbike.

Kattayan was a resident of Panpakkam village near Gummidipoondi and was working at a private factory in Ambattur Industrial Estate. His body was found under the bike on Friday morning around 6 am inside the pit dug for a bridge on the Chennai-Kolkata NH. It was sent to Ponneri Government Hospital for autopsy.

Kattayan was going back home from Kavaraipettai railway station when the accident happened. The Kavaraipettai police said that he failed to notice the diversion board and drove ahead to fall into the pit. His house is only a kilometre away from there.

It was construction workers who noticed the body on Friday morning and alerted the police. His wife had lodged a missing complaint at the police station on Thursday night.
