The human chain to protest the controversial CAA and NRC was led by senior advocates NGR Prasad, Nalini Chidambaram, K Duraisamy, R Vaigai and others. They said that they are forming the human chain to pledge their commitment to defend the constitution of India. Advocates also took pledges to uphold and defend the Constitution and asserted their citizenship of India based on constitutional values.

“CAA threatens the idea of India. The human chain-cum-protest is simply the expression of people who are protesting all over India and they are being attacked by the state actors,” said Senior Advocate R Vaigai.

She added that the Indian economy is in crisis and that the government has been decreasing their expenditure on health and education but were investing crores of rupees in the name of CAA and NRC. “Every voice against the CAA and NRC have been silenced. Even lawyers were detained, and cases were filed when they went to offer the legal help to the protesters who put up the kolam in Chennai,” said Vaigai.

Another lawyer who participated in the protest said, “As lawyers, it is our duty to stand on the frontlines in the battle to defend and protect our constitution. We pledge to fight against all assaults on the basic structure of our Constitution.” The lawyers also made a statementthat the citizens have a right to protest. They also held up the placards displaying ‘I am a citizen of India’ and read outthe preamble of the Constitution during the protest.
