According to sources, Devendran (50), a farmer from Keezhavannam near Thirumanur in Ariyalur, had borrowed Rs 9 lakh from the Ariyalur branch of a public bank for the purchase of a tractor. Following him not reportedly paying up two of the loan instalments, the bank on August 30 sent a notice to settle the dues by September 6, failing which it would attract the attachment of the farmer’s tractor. Bank officials, however, turned up at Devendran’s house on Tuesday and seized the tractor, sources said.

A frustrated Devendran then reportedly consumed pesticide and fell down unconscious. Neighbours rushed him to Ariyalur GH where he was admitted to the ICU, sources said. His condition is said to be critical. The police registered a case and are investigating.
