According to sources, when the Thirukattupalli police led by Inspector Kennedy were out on patrol, they were informed that a group led by Gowthaman were on the way to stage a protest near the Big Temple. Soon, the police plunged into action and held a vehicle check in the area. They then spotted Gowthaman and two of his supporters near the Cauvery new bridge near Thirukattupalli on Tuesday night. Subsequently, they were arrested. Despite Gowthaman arguing with the police that he and his group were on the way to attend the consecration in Thanjavur, the police arrested them.

Meanwhile, a group of eight people led by Saivite sadhu Sathyabhama from the Sathyabhama trust in Salem came to Thanjavur to reportedly stage a protest demanding to conduct the Big Temple’s consecration only in Tamil. But they were stopped at Vilar and were arrested. All the arrested people were released in the evening, sources said.
