SALEM: A Central Water Commission (CWC) member inspected Mettur dam on Friday (August 21), seeking details on its water storage, inflow and discharge, amid the ongoing dispute over the Cauvery and Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu dam.
CWC member and Union Jal Shakti Ministry additional secretary Yogesh Paithankar visited Mettur dam on Friday (August 21) evening and inspected the reservoir from the Diamond Jubilee Tower on the right bank.
He later held discussions with Water Resources Department officials and enquired about the dam's water level, inflow and discharge. He also sought details on the dam's height, water storage and safety.
Paithankar then left for Biligundulu on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border.
He is reportedly scheduled to visit the proposed Mekedatu dam site in Karnataka on Saturday morning. However, Public Works Department officials declined to confirm details of the proposed visit.
The visit comes after the Southern States Chief Ministers' Conference and Southern Zonal Council meeting held at Kovalam near Mahabalipuram, where the Cauvery water-sharing issue, the proposed Mekedatu dam and other inter-state issues involving Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were discussed.
Paithankar was accompanied by Mettur dam Executive Engineer Venkatajalapathy, Assistant Executive Engineer Selvaraj and Assistant Engineer Satheesh Kumar.
