Ban defied, implements placed on bulls

Despite threats of tough action by District Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram against the use of artificial means to goad animals to perform ferociously in high-action sport events like bull runs, visitors were shocked to spot bulls having metal implements attached to their bodies at an event in Melmayil village near KV Kuppam on the Gudiyattam road in the district on Wednesday.

Bull owners usually resort to such illegal means to make the animal perform at its best to earn the fame of owning an ‘unbeatable bull’ in the locality, sources said.

With bull runs found to be conducted in various villages in the district after Pongal, they added that such painful practices would only increase in the days to come. Though the bulls that participated in the event were tested and approved by a team of veterinary doctors appointed by the officials at the venue, clips showing thorny points found to be attached to the tail and the anus of the animal just before they were released, resulted in the animal’s fury increasing with each successive prick.
