CHENNAI: The variation in asset disclosures to the tune of Rs 105 crore in one of the affidavits filed by TVK president C Joseph Vijay reflected an irregularity, remarked the Madras High Court on Monday.

Vijay is contesting from Perambur and Tiruchy East constituencies in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Alleging that there were material discrepancies and inconsistencies in the two affidavits that Vijay filed for Perambur and Tiruchy East constituencies, V Vignesh of Vyasarpadi filed a petition in the High Court claiming that Vijay suppressed asset details in the Perambur affidavit.

Vijay declared his total assets as Rs 115.13 crore in the affidavit submitted for Perambur whereas he disclosed assets worth Rs 220.15 crore in the affidavit filed for Tiruchy (East), said the petitioner, who is a voter in Perambur.

Such non-disclosure amounts to suppression of material facts, he said, and sought a direction to the Director-General of Income Tax (DGIT) and the Election Commission of India to verify whether the asset disclosures were true, complete, and accurate. He also sought a direction to the District Election Officers of Chennai and Tiruchy to inquire and inform the public before the polls.

When the case came up for hearing, the bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan noted that there was a difference of more than Rs 100 crore in one of the affidavits and observed that it was an irregularity.
