Upset farmers threaten to consume rats

A section of farmers created flutter at the District Collectorate as they carried a dead rat and asked for Collector’s permission to eat its meat for a living as they found “no option due to drought situation”.

The farmers affiliated to Desiya Thennidia Nadigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam led by its sate president P Ayyakannu, said the inflow from Mettur was almost stopped and there was no seasonal rainfall to save the standing crops. Similarly, due to the demonetisation farmers could not spend their loan to but manure and pay labours, “In such circumstances, district administration should permit us to eat rat meat which is the only way to keep us living”, said the farmers. They sought a compensation of Rs 30,000 per acre for the withered crops and the farm labourers should be given a compensation of Rs 15,000 per ration card.  Stating that their occupation has been jeopardised at the end of the day, farmers sought district administration to permit the paddy cultivators to prepare and eat rat meat at district Collectorate.
