Police said that the family of five people were on their way to the Nagore Dargah in Nagapattinam. They were identified as Bakkar (40), his sisters Aasia (38) and Naseema (44), Nassema’s son Mohammed Shafi (25), and daughter Danisha (17) from Kakanad in Ernakulam district of Kerala. While the car was nearing Kadambarkoil village on NH 67 around noon, a sand-laden lorry proceeding to Karur collided head on. In the impact, Bakkar and Naseema were killed on the spot. Aasia succumbed to injuries on the way to Kulithalai GH.
However, Mohammed Shafi and Danisha, who were severely injured were rescued and rushed to the Tirchy GH. Their condition was said to be critical. Kulithalai police registered a case and detained the sand lorry driver Karuppusamy (33) from Salem. According to eye witnesses, both the vehicles were travelling in high speed on the road. Meanwhile, villagers complained that accidents have become a recurring thing on the NH 67 due to rash driving by sand lorries drivers.
