Leaders demand Rs 4,000 per tonne for sugarcane

Expressing dissatisfaction over the new procurement price of sugarcane fixed by the state government, DMK chief Karunanidhi, leaders of People Welfare Alliance and IJK founder Pari Vendhar demanded at least Rs 4,000 for procuring one tonne of sugarcane from farmers

DMK president M Karunanidhi said the state government has fixed the procurement price without consulting with the representatives of farmers. He said the government has hiked only Rs 200 from the previous years’ Rs 2,650 per tonne, and not Rs 550 as announced. 

The leaders of People Welfare Alliance in a joint statement claimed that private sugar mills didn’t pay the fixed price last year itself. India Jananayaka Katchi founder Dr Pari Vendhar said, “If the price is increased to 4,000 per tonne, it will the Pongal gift for the farmers.”
