According to DRI, on a tip-off that a passenger who has been frequently travelling on a specific flight, the officials mounted an intensive surveillance on the person and in the wee hours of Saturday, the suspected passenger was trying to board Air India flight IX 682 bound from Chennai to Singapore via Tiruchy. Soon, the DRI officials identified the passenger as A Vengatesan (35) of Chennai, travelling on board the flight (Seat No: 23D) and alerted their counterparts at Tiruchy airport.
Subsequently, the officials searched his baggage and found foreign currencies including Euros, Swiss francs, Saudi riyals and UAE dirhams with a total value of Rs 92 lakh. The currencies were cleanly rolled up and concealed inside the bottom portion of two strolley bags. The currencies were recovered from the passenger and the material used for smuggling was seized as per the Customs Act, 1962. Vengatesan was arrested as there is no provision to carry goods worth more than Rs 20 lakh. Further investigations are on.
