The policemen had broken open the box in which the bottles were kept and took away 50 bottles for their own use, as no Tasmac shops were functioning since the lockdown was announced.

The incident happened on April 15. The next day officials at the station found the safety box broke open and bottles missing. Shocked officials initiated an inquiry into the incident and found that head constable P Murugavel, 54, a resident of Thiruvotriyur, and constable S Muthu, 36, of Washermanpet had stolen the bottles.

Sources said they had used the help of habitual offender to break open the safety box and steal the liquor. “They took it for their own use and not to sell outside. They also took the help of an offender, with whom they had shared a part of the ‘booty’,” sources said.

The two were transferred last week and as a follow-up departmental action, were placed under suspension on Monday.
