CHENNAI: A major accident was averted on Porur–St Thomas Mount Road, popularly known as Mount Poonamallee Road, here on Friday, when stones reportedly fell from an ongoing Metro Rail construction site, damaging a moving car and causing traffic congestion on the busy stretch.
The incident occurred when Durai, a Kolapakkam resident and East District Sports Development Wing president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was driving his Mahindra XUV700 from Porur toward Iyyappanthangal. Stones then started raining from the construction site, striking the car.
Eyewitnesses reported that multiple stones fell in quick succession, severely damaging the vehicle’s front windscreen and roof. Fortunately, the occupants escaped without serious injuries. Two-wheeler riders behind the car narrowly avoided the debris, preventing what could have been a fatal accident.
In protest against the alleged negligence of Metro Rail construction authorities, Durai parked his damaged car across the road, causing heavy traffic congestion on Porur–St Thomas Mount Road. Traffic police later cleared the disruption.
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety at Metro Rail construction sites. The death of motorist Suresh last June, caused by a construction collapse on the same corridor, remains a tragic reminder. Commuters are now demanding stricter monitoring and accountability to prevent future accidents.
