The victim, Nirmala, was the wife of Nandakumar, a fish vendor. Last Wednesday, she was hit by a car while walking on the East Kalmandapam Road. With severe injuries, she was rushed to the Stanley government hospital, where she succumbed on Friday.

An officer from Kasimedu traffic investigation wing said a 17-year-old school student from Mannady was driving the car. “The teenager was asked to drive the car by his friend, whose mother had borrowed it from a friend of hers. Since it was a holiday, the two boys had taken the car out for a joy ride,” the officer said.

A case was registered and the teenager was detained. A case will be registered against the woman too who had borrowed the car, police said.

“She should not have allowed the children to take the car. The owner who is inBengaluru has been informed,” they said.
