On 2nd day of stir defacing Hindi sign boards, DMK men target post offices

CHENNAI: Workers of the ruling DMK carried on with their protest of defacing Hindi words from signboards of railway stations, post offices and central government buildings on the second day of their protest against the three-language policy forced upon the State by the BJP-led Union government.

DMK cadre defaced Hindi words on signboards at Sankarankovil railway station on Monday. A group of suspected DMK workers defaced Hindi writings on ATMs, BSNL offices across the State.

A group of DMK workers led by Sankarankovil MLA E Raja smeared grease oil over the Hindi letters on the name board at the Sankarankovil railway station in Tenkasi district. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is investigating this incident, according to a Daily Thanthi report.

On the second day of their protest, the agitators targeted central government buildings having Hindi names on their buildings and facilities such as ATMs.

While five DMK men were booked on Sunday for defacing Hindi letters on the Pollachi railway station name board, six of the party men were held for blackening the name board at Palayamkottai railway station, where they also raised slogans against the imposition of the Hindi.

The controversy over the BJP-led Centre blocking education funds over non-implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) is at the core of the issue. NEP makes three-language learning compulsory as against the two-language policy followed in TN.
