Addressing the reporters here, Murugan said, "From Pongal festival, January 15, 2024, the name of 'DD Podhigai' tv channel will be changed to 'DD Tamil'. Various new programs including political debates will be telecasted in DD Tamil. Earlier, we all used to watch 'Oliyum Oliyum (Audio and Video program) on DD Podhigai. Now again, on DD Tamil, we will telecast Oliyum Oliyum and other cinema programs. Also, DD Tamil reporters will go to the field next to collect the news. They (reporters) will question the chief minister MK Stalin as to why he is opposing NEET."

Doordarshan, a television unit under Prasar Bharati, a separate body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, GoI, launched many channels in regional languages.

Accordingly, it established a TV channel DD 5 on April 15, 1993 for Tamil language.

Later, based on the viewers' wish, DD 5 was renamed as DD Podhigai in reference to Podhigai hill, where the Tamil language is considered to have been born.

It has been known as DD Podhigai since January 15, 2000.

With this, the 24-year journey of DD Podhigai will come to an end on January 15, 2024.
