Loan collection agent hacked to death near Villivakkam flyover

The deceased was identified as Sarath Kumar of Villivakkam. He was working as a loan collection agent for banks, police said.

CHENNAI: A 58 year old man, a history sheeter was hacked to death in broad daylight by a gang in Villivakkam on Monday. Five persons were arrested by the city police in connection with the murder.

The deceased, R Sarathkumar of Villivakkam works as a collection agent for a private bank and was the main accused in a murder case in 2019.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Sarathkumar was murdered by a gang led by the nephew of the victim in the 2019 murder case, Janakiraman.

Janakiraman was an ICF employee and a trustee at a temple.

On Monday afternoon, Sarath kumar was riding in a two-wheeler with his friend along Redhills North road when the gang trailed the two-wheeler and intercepted them.

The gang started attacking Sarath kumar who tried to escape and fled the scene. Passerby rescued Sarath kumar and took him to a hospital where he was declared as brought dead.

Rajamangalam Police registered a case of murder and after investigations, Police arrested G Nithishkumar (23), S Prasanth (23), B Yogeswaran (23), D Rathnakumar (22) and A Benjamin (23) - all from Villivakkam.

Nithishkumar is the nephew of Janakiraman who was murdered in 2019 in a gang led by Sarathkumar, a police officer said.

All five persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. Police are also probing if the accused sent threats through social media to Sarathkumar's associates.
