CHENNAI: Gold prices in the city surged by Rs 960 on December 12 evening, pushing the yellow metal to Rs 98,960 per sovereign (8 grams) and Rs 12,370 per gram, a Rs 120 rise from the previous session. This is now the highest price recorded this year.

In the morning session, the 22-carat metal had surged by Rs 200, costing Rs 98,000 per sovereign (Rs 12,250 per gram). All together, this marks a Rs 2,560 rise in a single day.

The current gold rally comes after the US Federal Reserve delivered a much-anticipated rate cut and signalled further easing next year, weakening the dollar, and boosting global safe-haven demand while a record-low rupee supported domestic prices.

Earlier, the metal had touched its previous yearly high of Rs 97,600 per sovereign (Rs 12,200 per gram) on October 17.

From January 1, when gold stood at Rs 57,200 per sovereign (Rs 7,150 per gram), it has now climbed to Rs 98,960 per sovereign, an increase of Rs 41,760 or 73%.

Meanwhile, silver price, too, has been witnessing record highs. Silver increased by Re 1 to Rs 216 per gram (Rs 2,16,000 per kg). On December 11, silver was priced at Rs 209 per gram.
