Second yr B.Tech student dies by suicide at IIT-Madras

The deceased student was identified as Kedar Suresh of Maharashtra. Police sources said that he was found dead in his room in Kaveri hostel

CHENNAI: A second year B.Tech student at IIT-M (Indian Institute of Technology-Madras) allegedly died by suicide at his hostel room on Friday. This is the fourth such incident involving an IIT-M student this year.

The deceased student was identified as Kedar Suresh of Maharashtra. Police sources said that he was found dead in his room in Kaveri hostel.

Only on Thursday, IIT-M kicked off a wellness session series for its students. The session is part of several initiatives undertaken by the institute to provide every student with an environment filled with prosperity and peace, according to the management.

A week ago, about 100 students of IIT-M staged a sit-in protest inside the campus demanding the management to form a committee comprising a Justice to probe into the suicidal deaths reported inside the campus, following the death of a Ph.D candidate by suicide.

Sachin Kumar Jain (31) of West Bengal allegedly died by suicide at his room in Velachery on March 31.

On March 14, a 20-year-old B.Tech student at IIT-Madras died by suicide in his hostel room within the campus. The deceased was identified as V Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai from Andhra Pradesh. He was a third year student, pursuing B.Tech Electrical Engineering and was staying at Alaknanda hostel in IIT campus.

In February, a MS Research Scholar from Maharashtra, Stephen Sunny killed himself in his room.
