Police arrest six for extorting Rs 69 lakhs from software engineer

Police said Mohan Raj's wife came with Rs 69 lakhs to Thiruporur Kandaswamy Kulam and there the gang received the money but they did not release Mohan Raj as promised.

CHENNAI: Police arrested six men who kidnapped a software engineer at gunpoint and robbed Rs 69 lakhs from him in OMR on Saturday.

Police said Mohan Raj (42) of Thiruporur was working in a software company and was also a realtor. Police said Venkatesan (40) of Chidambaram and Suresh of Pudukottai contacted Mohan Raj and told him that they have a few lands for sale in Guduvanchery and Kelambakkam and told Mohan Raj to visit the place once and help them in selling it.

Following that, on October 7th Mohan Raj went to visit the land there Venkatesan who came with eight men in a car and kidnapped Mohan Raj at gunpoint near Thaiyur. Later the gang ordered Mohan Raj to tell his wife to come with the money which he has in the house.

Police said Mohan Raj's wife came with Rs 69 lakhs to Thiruporur Kandaswamy Kulam and there the gang received the money but they did not release Mohan Raj as promised.

Later Mohan Raj's wife filed a complaint at the Kelambakkam police station and the police who formed a special team with the help of mobile phone signals intercepted the gang in ECR and rescued Mohan Raj. The police then arrested Balakrishnan (21) of Arumbakkam, Saran Kumar (23) of Maduravoyal, Srinivasan (36), Gunasekar (28), Palani (31) of Maduravoyal and they were taken to the Kelambakkam police station. Then Venkatesan of Ramanathapuram was arrested on Friday night. Meanwhile, Mamannan (31) who planned the kidnap surrenderred in the Saidapet court on Friday and the police remanded all of them to judicial custody.

The police seized Rs 5 lakhs along with a gun and sickle from them.
