Narcotics worth Rs 8 cr seized from Ugandan woman in Chennai

CHENNAI: Customs officials seized 1.756 kg of Methaqualone and 1.4 kg of heroin worth Rs 8 crore from a Ugandan national at the Chennai airport on Monday.

Based on information, the Customs intercepted Noeline Nampeera of Uganda, who arrived from Addis Ababa on Sunday night.

During the examination of her check-in luggage, officials found 1.756 kg of Methaqualone and 1.431 kg of Heroin concealed in the inner layers of a corrugated carton box and the same was seized under the Customs Act. The passenger was arrested.

In another incident, during the surveillance, AIU officers intercepted Thirumurugan of Chennai near a toilet and found gold weighing about 524 grams in paste form valued at Rs 22.45 lakh concealed inside his inner garments.

During the investigation, it was found that gold was handed over to him inside the toilet by one Halaskhan, who arrived from Sharjah. The Customs nabbed Halaskhan at the exit and both of them were arrested for further inquiry.

Earlier, on Saturday the Customs seized 640 grams of gold worth Rs 28.24 lakh from Damayanthi Silva of Sri Lanka and was arrested for further inquiry.

In another case, two men who were bound for Sharjah were intercepted and during a personal search foreign currencies worth Rs 15.68 lakh were seized.
