'Drowning free Marina beach' to be inaugurated today

CHENNAI: The “Marina life guard unit” comprising trained police personnel and volunteers from fishing hamlets to prevent accidental drowning in Marina beach will be officially inaugurated on Saturday around 5 pm by Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, C Sylendra Babu.

During the event, a live demo on rescuing of persons / fishermen and their boats by the trained Police personnel / Lifeguards / Fire and Rescue Team / Fishermen Volunteers and Indian Coast Guard by the Jetskies, Speed boats, Stand-up Paddling’s, Proto-Type Drone of Coastal Security Group and Indian Coast Guard Helicopter are going to be utilized to show cause the capability of Life Guard Unit. Eight fishermen who are appointed as Life Guards on contractual basis would also be inducted, an official release said.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin had made an announcement in the Assembly Session on September 13, 2021 regarding formation of “Marina Life Guard Unit” to prevent the accidental drowning of tourists in sea at Marina Beach. Accordingly, the Government had issued G.O. sanctioning Rs.2.60 Crores for manpower and procurement of vehicles, equipments.
