On Tuesday, a Tata Sumo transporting cash to an Indian Overseas Bank’s ATM off Angappa Naickan Street, went missing when it was parked outside the ATM at around 7 pm. Narayanan, the driver of the vehicle who was called away from the vehicle due to a phone call alerted the police who launched a hunt immediately and found the vehicle, abandoned in Royapuram.
They also nabbed Rajesh as the prime suspect. Sources told this paper that the caller who had called Narayanan had told the driver that the ‘custodian’ did not want the cash to be filled at the ATM as there was a technical glitch. Alert investigating officers immediately focused on the caller as the word ‘custodian’ is a jargon used only by banks, and usually refers to the key person in charge of ATM cash transactions in banks.
According to the police, Rajesh was waiting with a duplicate key of the vehicle got in and drove it away with Rs. 26 lakhs on board.
Rajesh used Lingam to only make the call from Madhavaram from a landline with clear instiructions. Lingam correctly made the call to divert the attention of the driver and Rajesh within no time escaped with the vehicle.
