Stalin, a CPM functionary, who led the party men with the damaged parts of the trees, claimed that the RC church had newly installed a Cross on the church premises.

However, since it was not visible outside with six large trees interrupting the view, the Church management decided to uproot the trees and threw acid on the trees, he said.

Owing to the acid treatment, the trees allegedly died and shed all the leaves. “With the help of the local councillor the trees were uprooted. The huge trees were more than 100 years old. Now the road looks empty and lifeless owing to the absence of trees,” he said.

Hence the church management should be booked and action should be taken against them, demanded Stalin. Earlier, they had petitioned the National Green Tribunal and Forest Department. Even Collector was petitioned thrice but no action had been taken, alleged Stalin.

Similarly, members of AIDWA who accompanied CPM members demanded the district administration to remove the deluxe liquor shop and bar attached to it located at Melapennagaram Main road in Madurai.
