    Extending support to refugees

    World Refugee Day (WRD), observed on June 20, every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world. The celebration provides an opportunity to all to help the refugees worldwide to rebuild their quality of life through lots of related activities.

    Ahead of this year’s observance, here are a few interesting facts associated with it.

    • The annual commemoration is marked by a variety of events in more than 100 countries, involving government officials, humanitarian aid workers, celebrities, civilians and the forcibly displaced themselves.
    • The UN Refugee Agency believes now is the time to show world leaders that the global public stands with refugees, and it will launch its #WithRefugees petition on June 20 this year to send a message to governments that they must work together and do their fair share for refugees.
    • The #WithRefugees petition will be delivered to UN headquarters in New York ahead of the UN High Level Meeting on Refugees and Migrants, scheduled for the September 19.
    • There are as many as 51 million refugees in the world today who struggle to survive or have any hope for their future.
    • There are around 32,000 persons of concern to UNHCR in India, of whom some 26,500 are recognised refugees and another 5,700 are currently registered as asylum seekers, mostly from Afghan and Myanmar, with smaller groups from countries other countries including Somalia, Iraq and Iran.
