Fire and frost resistant superhero costume is here

The suit has been dubbed as the “superhero costume,” since it’s made out of fabric that doesn’t burn in the fire, protects from freezing temperatures and harmful electromagnetic radiation, according a report in Sputnik. The suit, the report says, can withstand open flame temperature of 600 degrees Celsius and protect from the heat of up to 1,200 degrees Celsius. 

“We’re now completing the process of patenting the material and hope that after testing at the end of this year, it [the suit] will be adopted by our rescue workers in the Arctic,” the Sputnik quotes Professor Vadim Tarasov, the head of one of MISiS departments as having shared the information. The professor added that the university was carrying out the joint trials with the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations to test the capabilities of the “superhero suit”. 

The secret of the suit is that it has aramid fibers coated with a special magnetic alloy, the magazine. 

This, the report says, allows the suit to combine very opposite characteristics - fire and frost resistance. As for extreme cold, a person wearing the suit is safe from temperatures as low as minus 120 degrees Celsius. In addition to being extra durable (it’s almost impossible to break the material), the suit creates a protective magnetic field, which supposedly helps to boost the mood and stimulate the wearer’s vital body functions. 

In other words, a person wearing the “superhero” costume is not only protected from the fire, frost and electromagnetic radiation, but would also always be in a good mood, the professor said. MISiS scientists have been working to develop the suit for five years and this year the group received an award from the Russian government for their contribution in science and technology. Russian scientists claim that this is the world’s first suit which provides protection from very high as well as extremely low temperatures, besides shielding from radiation hazard.
