Paris police recover third body after raid
A third body has been recovered from the apartment in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis raided by police after last Friday’s attacks, agency reports say.
Paris
They confirmed the body of a woman was found overnight in a search of the flat following Wednesday morning’s raid, but did not give her identity. But a passport bearing the name Hasna Aitboulahcen, who blew herself up, was found in a handbag at the scene. Hasna Aitboulahcen is widely reported to have been Abaaoud’s cousin, and died after detonating a suicide vest soon after the seven-hour long raid began.
The suspected ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud was killed in Wednesday’s raid. The simultaneous attacks by suicide bombers and gunmen on bars and restaurants, a concert hall and sports stadium last Friday killed 129 people and left hundreds of people wounded. Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attacks. France responded by attacking ISIS sites in Syria.
More strikes
President Francois Hollande Friday ordered that French air strikes against Islamic State jihadists be stepped up in Iraq as well as Syria following the Paris attacks, his office said in a statement. Russia too did the same after confirmation that a bomb downed a Russian passenger plane over Egypt last month, killing all 224 people on board.
Meanwhile, Russian parliament is to propose new counter-terrorism measures. At a rare meeting of both chambers of parliament, they propose to bring in tougher punishment for terrorists and possibly introduce a raft of new security measures.
