With ranking system gone, Class 10 students cheerful

“Earlier, I was worried about the rank. We have had rank holders in the past and the teachers were expecting the same this year too. I am a good student and a teacher said that she is expecting a state rank from me,” says Bhumi, who wants to take the Science stream in Class 11. “I will be happy if I am the top scorer from my school and get to be the office- bearer,” she adds. 

However, students continue to be clueless about what Class 11 and 12 will be like. “We have seen our seniors have so much fun in Class 11, as they get to participate in all the inter-school sports tournaments. Now, I am unsure what the situation would be, once we join the school. We only hope we  get to participate in extracurricular activities,” says R Vignesh, a CA aspirant. 

Parents, however, say that though they are relieved that the ranking system is out, they are awaiting the details about the Class 11 board examination. “We don’t know how to prepare students for the Class 11 board exams,” says Sumit Kumar a Parents Teachers Association member at a school in Kilpauk. 

“We plan to hold a meeting with the school management and get the details.”

The state-run 104 health helpline has added resources beginning Thursday, to counsel students and parents before the Class 10 board exam results are released. B Prabhudoss, head, Marketing and Communications, GVK EMRI, adds that the scrapping of the ranking system has eased the stress, but the sense of competition still prevails among students. “Class 10 is different from Class 12. Class 10 is the first board exam the students write. They are at the adolescent stage and a lot of factors affect their performance. The way we deal with these students is different from how we handle Class 12 students,” says Prabhudoss. 

“Though there is no ranking system, students want  to perform well to choose the right  stream. They have the pressure of the family and the fear of  failure,” he adds. According to him, this year, they received a record 13,000 calls before the Class 12 results.
