Replace sugar with date paste for healthy desserts
Refined sugar is being termed a ‘white poison’, that is linked with numerous dangerous health conditions — from weight gain to increased risk of heart diseases, high blood sugar and diabetes. While every kind of packaged food out in the market is being loaded with refined white sugar, alternatives are also becoming increasingly popular.

A variety of artificial sweeteners have been filing up in the shelves of grocery stores, but healthier alternatives to them are the natural sweeteners. Dates provide the sweetness that we want out of refined sugar, while also being healthy — making for one of the best natural sweetener options. Hence, making date paste right at home can be an easy way to add sweetness for desserts.
As powerhouses of energy and fibre, date paste or syrup can be put to use instead of sugar for desserts like cupcakes, cakes, puddings, halwas, laddoos and much more. This high-calorie ingredient, which is a staple in the Middle East, has existed for thousands of years. Ripened dates contain nearly 80 per cent of sugar, making them great alternatives for sugar, while also being nutrition-rich. With a good amount of protein, fibre, and minerals like zinc, magnesium and manganese, you need to look no further for options when it comes to making a switch from refined sugar.
Here Is How You Can Make Your Own Date Paste At Home:
- Soak the dates after removing their seeds in lukewarm water for a few hours.
- After a few hours, remove the soaked dates, and retain the water.
- Blitz the soaked dates in a blender, while adding the saved water, until they come to a paste-like consistency.
- For additional flavour, add in salt or cinnamon to the paste. Store in an airtight container and use in desserts.
