How are renal diseases in children different from adults?

The disease spectrum in paediatric nephrology is very different from that seen in the adult population. The general perception of renal disorders is that they present with decreased urine output and edema. But in children, the disease manifestation includes increased urine output, mild dehydration, persistence of bed wetting and increased thirst. Early identification and treatment of children with such symptoms can retard the progression to end stage renal disease. Knowledge of the presenting complaints and a high index of suspicion, with early intervention will be very beneficial in these children.
