Chennai
I suffer from hypertension and diabetes. I was told that I am prone to vascular diseases. Is that true?
—Sujata P, Kelly’s
It is true. Our body has a well-established system of blood vessels which supply Oxygen through blood to all the vital organs in the body. These blood vessels can be affected due to old age, diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol and smoking causing narrowing and decrease in blood supply. If the circulation to the limbs is affected, you may develop pain in the calf muscles while walking. It is therefore important for you to understand the symptoms and approach a doctor immediately.
—Dr N Sritharan, vascular surgeon
As monsoons are soon beginning, the fear of mosquito related disease are on the rise. How should we be prepared for it?
—Mrinalini K, Pallavaram
There is the Aedes mosquito one must watch out for, which breeds in clear water. This mosquito tends to breed enormously during the monsoons. There is also the Anopheles mosquito, which breeds in well water, overhead tanks and other natural water resources. This mosquito transmits the malaria parasite. When it bites an individual, it can cause malaria – the symptoms for which include high fever, chills, rigor, headache and vomiting. It is therefore important that the public takes precautionary measures to prevent the breeding of these mosquitoes.
—Dr J Jagannath, general physician
