People do several activities to maintain a healthy body like yoga or workout, but often fail to focus on the spine which is essential for a healthy body. The three primary factors to maintain a healthy and strong spine are right body weight, maintaining correct posture. A simple method to calculate optimum weight is to measure a person’s height in centimetres and subtract 105. The result is the person’s weight in kilograms. If your height is 175 cms, then your optimum weight is 175 – 105, that is 70 kg. It can vary by 5 kg. Throughout the day, for every physical activity, your spine will have consciously  or unconsciously a good effect or a bad effect. There can never be a nil effect.

Following are crucial body postures that one should consciously avoid to avoid straining the spine: Sitting on a chair with the right leg over the left — this affects the L1 and L2 vertebrae. Sitting with the left leg over the right affects the C2 and C5 cervical vertebrae. Sitting slouching with the heel resting down and toes pointed upwards, tilting the neck towards the right or left and sitting with elbows resting on the table. In all of the above postures, pain might not be instant or immediate, but they will lead to unavoidable chronic damage to the spine.

Following are the postures that one needs to take conscious effort to maintain to avoid strain and pain in the spine. One should sit or stand with feet firmly placed on the floor. Make sure your spine is perpendicular to the ground while sitting or standing. While sleeping or lying down the spine should be perfectly parallel to the ground.

The purpose of human birth is find oneness with the divine. This can be done only through spiritual sadhana and meditation which will be impossible without a healthy spine. Even to experience worldly pleasure, you need a healthy spine. I always tell my students tbat there is no point having a Benz car with a back pain. It is high time for you to take responsibility for your spine before you lose your responsing-ability.

Wish you a life of health, strength and happiness.
