Use ammonia-free hair dyes to keep off allergies

    Chennai

I regularly use black dye for my hair. But recently, I have been suffering from cold, nasal blockage and I feel uncomfortable while breathing. Please clarify whether dyeing of hair could a reason for this. — Prabakaran, Chennai

Definitely, the hair dye is causing the problem. Most hair dyes contain PPD and ammonia and these can cause such unexplained reactions or allergies in a person. You can be using it for a long time, but still develop such allergies, both serious and mild. Almost all type of allergies can be brought about by dyes. Everyone asks what’s the alternative? We recommend PPD and ammonia-free dyes, but still there is no guarantee that these are 100 per cent free of the components. — Dr Subhashini Mohan, Dermatologist, Motherhood Hospitals.

How frequently should one do the tests for blood sugar? I have been told by my diabetologist that I should review my sugar levels at least once in three months? — Anand, Kotturpuram

For any normal adult, who is at the risk of diabetes, we ask them to carry out tests once a year. But for those who are undergoing medication, if the tests reveal any abnormality in the organs like kidney or eyes, or sometimes even nerves, we ask them to monitor it more regularly. It is not just about numbers; it is about averting the risks that come with chronic diabetes. Especially, when we carry out HbA1c test. The levels are reflective of blood glucose levels over the past six to eight weeks and do not reflect daily ups and downs of blood glucose. This is an extremely important test and has to be done a little more frequently. — Dr RP Rajesh, Consultant Diabetologist, Dr Mehta’s Hospitals.
