Q. How can foods help in dental health? Is there a routine or daily dietary pattern to be followed for maintaining dental health?Â

Dental health of a person is determined even before he or she is born. It begins when the mother is expecting a baby and she needs to have a balanced diet for the child to grow up having a good dental health. Nutritious food includes essential vitamins, minerals and calcium that guarantee dental health. Dental health can be ensured when the child is young through a carefully planned dietary chart.Â
At this age, milk and milk products play an important role, as they are excellent sources of calcium. There are food items like coriander that also has calcium in it, while fruit and vegetables provide the required vitamin and minerals. In adults, most often the deficiency of Vitamin B and C is reflected in the health of the gums. Spongy and bleeding gums indicate the lack of essential vitamins.

Q. In case of hypothyroidism, what apart from thyroid levels need to be monitored regularly? Are there any food restrictions to be followed?Â

It is the TSH levels that need to be monitored regularly, most importantly. However, if there is swelling in the neck, tests have to be done to check for goitre. Apart from these, there might be a need to also check the lipid profile for one off cases. There are no food restrictions and one can eat cooked cauliflower and cabbages once in a while there is a belief that these may not be suitable in uncooked form. They can follow a normal diet pattern without any restrictions. For women in the age group of 20-50 years, regular periods indicate it is under control, if there are no other important symptoms like tiredness and fatigue.
