Using her brush and palette to make individuals across the world feel empowered is makeup artist Vithya Visvendra. While battling with depression, she found solace in giving people transformations and today, she’s one of the most sought after bridal makeover experts. Her Masterclasses and YouTube tutorials have inspired many amateurartists too.
Currently based in Malaysia, Vithya has strong connections to the Tamil language because of her Sri Lankan Tamil roots. Her sari draping tutorials and Instagram stories of her humming to Kollywood tunes while driving have garnered many fans from namma ooru. She’s also worked with many South Indian celebrities — Amy Jackson, Silambarasan and Anirudh Ravichander, to name a few.
“My favourite experience though will always be working with Sneha. Not only is she humble and kind but once, she saw me struggling with my dupatta in the corner of the room. Whilst chewing food, she stopped everything she was doing, walked across the room and helped me pin my dupatta in place. I will never forget such a kind gesture,” says Vithya.
The 33-year-old’s tryst with makeup began at quite a dark time in her life. She recalls, “I was suffering from depression for many years and the only pleasure I got in life was the rewarding feeling of seeing my client’s satisfaction and excitement in the mirror. It made me feel proud of myself for a change.” Did she expect it would take off on such a global level? “When I started I never thought that far. I was so in love with doing makeovers — still am — that it never crossed my mind that I would ever receive a global recognition,” she replies.
Vithya takes a lot of care in choosing the products she works with, but has figured out a hack that saves time. “I chose products that are recommended by beauty bloggers or established makeup artists in the industry. It saves me from wasting a lot of money, and also when you know that it has been tried and tested by another professional, it is good enough for me,” she explains.
When asked if she looks at the ethical side behind products and brands too, she clarifies, “In terms of the ethical side, as far as I have done the research, the brands I use do not do animal testing for their products. I would love to go vegan, but having relocated to Malaysia, I am finding it a bit more difficult to find vegan makeup that is also recognised by my clients.”
As many as 2,02,137 followers on YouTube, 1,97,000 Insta fans and a packed calendar until 2020 — Vithya simply never stops at walking the extra mile to spread the impact makeup can have on a person’s life. Her Masterclasses also attract participants from around the globe and the seats get sold out like hot cakes.
“There was a time when the only way you could learn from a professional makeover artist was to fork out a lot of money for an entire course. Not only was that expensive for a beginner, but also time consuming, as the courses can last from weeks to months. My masterclasses are a one-day demonstration that are affordable. Essentially, it gives anyone the flexibility to decide if he/she wants to pursue makeup as a career without worrying about the loss of a huge sum of money and that’s very important,” sums up Vithya.
