Malaysian school textbook instructing girls to protect “sex organs” sparks outrage

The Malaysian Education Ministry is receiving flak from people across the world for the “sexist and victim-shaming” content published in one of the government school textbooks. A lesson meant for 9-year-olds in the textbook depicted how it was important for girls to protect the modesty of their sex organs through “appropriate clothing” in order to avoid being sexually assaulted.  

Consequently, an image of the lesson posted on social media went viral. People fumed at how the lesson was misleading in so many ways–from disregarding male victims to instilling shame in the victim rather than the perpetuator. Teo Nie Cheng, Deputy Education Minister, Malaysia, said the government would send out correction pages to all the schools in view of the issue.

Indian buyers amused by coconut shells sold for Rs 1,500 on Amazon 

Tweets ranging from “Say goodbye to education” to “Money really does grow on trees” emerged after the peculiar–and highly priced Amazon product–went viral. Amazon had, in fact, priced the empty coconut shells at Rs 3,000, and slashed it down to Rs 1,500 only recently! IPS office Rema Rajeshwari from Munnar posted this on Twitter and there was no stopping Twitterati after that. People had their own creative takes on the trending topic, and some were completely entertained by the EMI option that Amazon availed for the coconut shell!
