After WhatsApp, Viber implements new privacy feature
Viber, a popular messaging and internet voice-calling service provider with more than 700 million users, has implemented end-to-end encryption to protect its users against hacking.
Chennai
Viber announced that it will begin rolling out end-to-end encryption for all of its one-to-one and group conversations, including video, voice and text messages. This means that the company won’t be able to read any of its user messages, and neither can the government agencies.
The move comes after Facebook-owned WhatsApp released full end-to-end encryption earlier this month, giving secure and private instant messaging service to the masses.
Viber's end-to-end encryption feature is available in the application's latest version -- 6.0 -- for Android, iOS, PCs and Macs. It also provides strong privacy and security for voice or video calls, text messages, videos and photos exchanged by users in both group and one-to-one conversations.
The latest version of Viber also includes a "Hidden Chats" feature. This will allow users to hide specific conversations and can be accessed only if you have a PIN code.
Viber and WhatsApp are not the first messaging services to implement end-to-end encryption. However, they are definitely the most used ones.Â
What is end-to-end encryption?
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a method of communication where only the people communicating can read the messages. No observer can access the cryptographic keys needed to decrypt the conversation, which includes the telecom providers, Internet providers and the company that runs the messaging service.Â
