CHENNAI: State BJP president K Annamalai on Thursday said the saffron party, as told by Chief Minister MK Stalin, is the prime opposition party to the DMK. Similarly, the DMK party is the main opposition party for the BJP in the State.

Five years ago, the DMK leader said there was no presence of BJP in the State. The same leader is now considering the saffron party as his opposition, said Annamalai at Chennai airport after returning from the USA.

He also noted that his visit to the USA for fellowship was fruitful and he met several Tamils there and interacted with them.

Recollecting Stalin’s speech in the DMK’s general council meeting last Sunday, Annamalai said the Chief Minister would have more sleepless nights seeing the growth of the BJP in the State. “So, my humble request to the ministers is to allow their Chief Minister to sleep well now itself,” he said.

On the ongoing Hindi imposition row, Annamalai said the Congress party had a policy to make Hindi language compulsory in 1980.

After the BJP voted to power, a committee was constituted to review the issues related to the use of Hindi for the official purpose. The Central government has categorised the states into three based on the population of Hindi speaking people. Tamil Nadu falls into the third category (non-Hindi speaking). “We will strongly oppose, if any examinations are made compulsory in Hindi language. We will never allow that,” said Annamalai.

He cricitised the DMK party that it has been using people’s emotion over language as a tool to divert their attention from mismanagement of their governance.

The DMK government should focus on the welfare of the people instead of spreading misinformation.

He further said that his party had geared up for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the people were also ready to win the polls.
