DMK general council meeting held in Chennai on Sunday

CHENNAI: Senior DMK minister I Periasamy on Sunday said that the party was capable of winning the 2024 Lok Sabha election on its own.

Speaking at the general council meeting of the party this morning, Periasamy subtly referred to the statements of BJP and its allies and said that the opposition parties are claiming that three parties have come together and they could pose a challenge to the DMK and they make claims about the BJP forging alliance with other parties.

“I dare them. All of you may unite. We are ready to demonstrate that we can contest alone and win the ensuing election (2024) Lok Sabha election on our own," he said.

The senior DMK minister's comments came in the backdrop of Stalin repeatedly affirming his commitment to the secular values and continuing the existing alliance.

Taking cues from his colleagues Pon Muthuramalingam, A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran, he said that Stalin was the only leader to safeguard democracy in the country. Setting the tone for Periasamy, the Nilgiris MP cum former union minister A Raja drew a distinction between M Karunanidhi and MK Stalin’s treatment of the BJP. Recalling how Karunanidhi had confronted the BJP in the past and conditionally supported the BJP (during Vajpayee led NDA govt) with a common minimum programme, Raja said that Stalin has already declared that he was ready to cooperate with the BJP-led Union government without compromising on the value and ideology the DMK espouses.
