Labourer gets 14 years RI for abusing girl

TIRUVALLUR: A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 14 years in prison under the Pocso Act by Tiruvallur District Women’s Court on Thursday on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Avadi.

The accused was identified as Jai Ganesh, a contract labourer, residing in Bajanai Koil Street in Avadi. According to the police, six years ago, the minor who was abused suddenly went missing from her home.

Based on a complaint from the victim’s parent, the police who went in search of her found that the accused had allegedly sweet talked her into eloping with him after which he sexually abused her. They arrested him under Pocso Act. Tiruvallur Women’s Court judge sentenced him to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and also fined Rs 4,000. The judge directed the accused to give Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the victim.
