“This support would ensure the students spend less money for food as it has been decided to be distributed under subsidised cost,” Tamil University officials said.
TIRUCHY: Akshaya Pathram Scheme to feed hostel students in Tamil University was launched on Wednesday.
In order to provide cost effective and quality food to the students, the Vallalar Sanmarka Mandram had organised a union of NGOs to support the poor students and launched the Akshaya Pathram Scheme.
Accordingly, Nanban Trust has taken charge of providing one tonne rice each month while Arul Kanchi, Friends Educational Trust have promised to provide the groceries each month and cash deposits were also made from various organisations to meet the expenses.
According to the University sources, there are 450 students staying in the University hostel and each student has to spare Rs 2,000 per month for food.
“This support would ensure the students spend less money for food as it has been decided to be distributed under subsidised cost,” Tamil University officials said.
They also said that there were a few students who cannot afford to pay the mess fee and this scheme would definitely help the students who come from poor economic conditions and otherwise, they can spend their money for other useful purposes.
The scheme was launched by Vice Chancellor Thiruvalluvan, while University Registrar Thiyagarajan, Sanmarka Mandram Coordinator Kurunji Vendan and others were present.
