COIMBATORE: Three college students died after their car fell into a 100 feet deep well in Coimbatore on Friday.

Police identified the deceased as V Adarsh, Ravi Krishnan and Nandanan, all aged 18 were returning after celebrating Onam in a private resort on Siruvani Road, when they met with their watery grave. Their friend Roshan (18) from SV Nagar in Vadavalli however managed to get out of the car and escape.

After an overnight stay in the resort, the friends had left in a car driven by Roshan to Vadavalli with a plan to attend college on Friday. While nearing Thennamanallur, Roshan tried to swerve the speeding car at a curve, when he lost control.

The car crashed into the gate of a fenced farm and plunged into a well located inside with around 70 feet of water. The well did not have a parapet wall and was located around eight feet away from the road.

Police said Roshan managed to get out of the car, while three others were trapped inside and drowned to death. Villagers who came to the spot on hearing the loud noise rescued Roshan as he was found struggling in water. On receiving information, the fire and rescue personnel from Thondamuthur arrived and took out the bodies of three others one by one at around 12.45 pm.Coimbatore rural police have registered a case and efforts were on to take out the car from inside the well.

Woman crushed to death, 19 injured

In another incident, a 45-year-old woman died and 19 others suffered minor injuries after a mini-bus they were travelling overturned on Salem National Highways at Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district.

Police said Shanthi from Thippampatti village was crushed beneath the overturned vehicle. They all were bound to attend a marriage. The Uthangarai police sent the body of the deceased for a post-mortem and further inquiries are on.
