CHENNAI: Government doctors who have been affected due to non-parental department transfer and promotion counselling are planning to go on a one day token fast along with their family members on August 28, 2022.

Doctors say that unqualified doctors of a different speciality are not the right suit as a non-parent department specialist.

The postings in departments such as Transfusion medicine, Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR), Psychiatry, Neurosurgery and Forensic medicine in several medical colleges are filled in by non-parent department doctors.

They are alleging non-transparency in the counselling process, while the officials from the Directorate of Medical Education state that the non-parental department shift is being done but the counselling was completely transparent.

"We have requested the Health Minister to look into the matter and despite his instructions, the Directorate of Medical Education has not made any intervention. In order to demand intervention in this issue, the doctors affected are going on a token fast this Sunday," said Dr S Perumal Pillai, president of Tamil Nadu Legal Coordination Committee for Government Doctors.

He added that non-parental doctors are occupying the departments even though qualified candidates are available adequately in the State government service, which is injustice to them. This leads to the treatment of patients by those non-parental doctors who are not qualified in the respective department.

On the other hand, the officials from the Directorate of Medical Education maintain that the instructions to shift to the parent department have been issued to all the serving doctors
