Shah talks to EPS, central team to assess damage

Union Minister Amit Shah on Thursday interacted with chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and enquired about the status of cyclone Burevi. During the telephonic conversation, the Union Minister assured all relief and assistance from the centre, read a statement from the State secretariat.

Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar also conducted a review meeting with the State Disaster Management officials and urged the district collectors to designate night patrol squads to monitor the lakes and waterbodies that are brimming.

“So far, 14 teams of the NDRF have been rushed to the southern districts and evacuation of people in low-lying areas have commenced. In Ramanathapuram district, around 3,500 people have been housed in relief
centres and such facilities have also been operationalised in Thoothukudi district,” commissioner of disaster management K Phanindra Reddy told reporters.
 
The State Disaster Management teams along, with Agriculture Department staff, started assessing damage in the delta region where it has been raining heavily since Wednesday.

Similarly, flags marches were also conducted by the NDRF in Tenkasi and Senkottai taluks and farmers were asked to prune the coconut trees ahead to the cyclone.

The central team, scheduled to visit the State on December 1, will now visit the coastal and southern regions of TN on December 5.

The team will assess the damages caused by cyclones Nivar and Burevi. The team, led by joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs Ashutosh Agnihotri, would undertake field inspection along with State officials. The team is expected to undertake a three-day visit and would cover more areas than earlier intimated, sources said.
